Srilanka Won the Toss Elected to Bat 1st
Umar Gul Strikes Early for Pakistan Sri Lanka have won the toss and chose to bat in the first Test being played in Pakistan in 14 months.
Experts reckon that there should be some movement early but the pitch would quickly settle into a good batting track. "If we can concentrate on batting for long periods on this wicket, we should end make a good score," Mahela Jayawardene, Sri Lanka's captain, said at the toss.
Chaminda Vaas is back but all eyes will be on the debutant opener Tharanga Paranavitana, who replaced Michael Vandort. With 893 runs at 74.41 and 621 at 51.75 in the last domestic seasons, Parnavitana is in form but it will be interesting to see how he plays at the highest level.
Sri Lanka have gone in with two seamers and two spinners. "It is the combination that has worked for us in the last 12 months or so," Jayawardene said.
Pakistan too have gone in with a similar set up. They handed debuts to seamer Sohail Khan, who honed his skills at the Rashid Latif Academy in Karachi, and the opening batsman Khurram Manzoor.
Pakistan: 1 Salman Butt, 2 Khurram Manzoor, 3 Younis Khan (capt), 4 Misbah-ul-haq, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Faisal Iqbal, 7 Kamran Akmal (wk), 8 Yasir Arafat, 9 Sohail Khan, 10 Danish Kaneria, 11 Umar Gul.
Sri Lanka: 1 Malinda Warnapura, 2 Tharanga Paranavitana, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Muttiah
